398 abuse cases against women, minors reported in four months

Karachi recorded 398 complaints involving domestic violence, harassment, abuse and related offences against women and minors from January to April, according to the Police Women and Child Protection Cell. The report shows domestic violence was the most reported category.

KARACHI: Karachi recorded 398 complaints involving domestic violence, harassment, abuse and related offences against women and minors during the first four months of the year, according to the latest report issued by the Police Women and Child Protection Cell.

The figures cover the period from January to April and include 388 adult women and 10 minors, the report said. It described domestic violence as the most frequently reported category during the period under review.

According to the report, authorities received 297 complaints related to domestic abuse. Of these, 190 were resolved, while nearly 100 remain pending, indicating delays in relief and follow-up for complainants. Police registered three formal cases in connection with domestic violence incidents.

The report also showed a significant number of harassment and intimidation complaints in the city. The protection cell received 83 such complaints between January and April. Out of these, 42 were resolved, while action on 41 complaints is still in progress. Officials confirmed that one formal case was registered in relation to a harassment complaint.

In addition, the cell received 19 complaints linked to rape, abuse and threats, adding to concerns over violence faced by women and children in the city. Of these cases, nine were resolved, while 10 are still pending investigation and legal action.

Protection cell response

Officials of the Women and Child Protection Cell said efforts are continuing to provide legal assistance, counselling and protection to affected women and children. The report, however, also pointed to a substantial number of unresolved complaints across categories.

The data released by the protection cell presents an overview of cases reported to the police mechanism tasked with handling complaints involving women and children in Karachi. The largest share of complaints came from domestic violence cases, followed by harassment and intimidation, while a smaller number related to rape, abuse and threats.

The report said 190 of the 297 domestic violence complaints had been resolved. In harassment and intimidation cases, 42 out of 83 complaints were resolved. In the category covering rape, abuse and threats, nine of the 19 complaints were resolved.

At the same time, pending cases remained across all three categories. Nearly 100 domestic violence complaints were still unresolved, while 41 harassment and intimidation complaints were under process. Another 10 complaints related to rape, abuse and threats were awaiting further investigation and legal action.

The latest figures from the Police Women and Child Protection Cell highlight the volume of complaints reported in Karachi during the first four months of the year and the pace at which authorities have processed them.
