Seven killed, 33 injured as heavy rains hit Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Seven people were killed and 33 injured in rain-related incidents across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to the PDMA. Authorities said relief operations were under way in affected districts.

PESHAWAR: Heavy rain and strong winds caused multiple casualties and injuries across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa over the past 24 hours, with the Provincial Disaster Management Authority saying on Sunday that seven people were killed and 33 others were injured in weather-related incidents.

According to the PDMA, the deaths and injuries were reported from several districts, including Bannu, Shangla and Mansehra, where roofs and walls gave way during severe weather on Saturday. The dead included two children, four men and one woman. Among the injured were seven men, 12 women and 14 children.

Relief operations under way

The authority said it was coordinating with Rescue 1122 and district administrations to continue relief work in the affected areas. It added that local administrations had been directed to speed up assistance for families impacted by the incidents.

In its statement, the PDMA said its teams, Rescue 1122 personnel and district authorities remained engaged in relief activities in the affected districts. The authority also urged people to avoid unnecessary movement, especially towards vulnerable tourist locations, and to follow official weather advisories closely.

Weather advisory and emergency response

The incidents came as the Pakistan Meteorological Department had forecast dust storms, windstorms, rain and thunderstorms in the country’s upper regions from June 11 to 13. The PDMA director general urged the public to remain careful in view of the continuing weather situation and said the authority’s Emergency Operations Centre was fully functional.

Citizens seeking assistance or information have been advised by the PDMA to contact its helpline at 1700. The latest deaths follow similar incidents in May, when two people were killed and 11 others were injured in weather-related events across the province.
