The Sindh government has opened the Azeempura Flyover in Karachi, with Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah saying the Rs1.56 billion project was completed in 90 days. The scheme is aimed at easing congestion and improving links to key city corridors and the airport.
KARACHI: The Sindh government on Sunday opened the Azeempura Flyover for traffic, with Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah saying the Rs1.56 billion scheme was finished in 90 days, 10 days before its target completion date.
The chief minister formally inaugurated the flyover and lauded the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) for completing the project ahead of schedule. According to details shared at the ceremony, work on the project began on March 8, 2026, and was completed on June 8 against a 100-day target.
Addressing the inauguration, Murad Ali Shah said the project had been designed to reduce congestion at one of Karachi’s busiest intersections and strengthen links between important road corridors in the city. He said the flyover would help cut traffic pressure and improve direct access towards Shahrah-e-Bhutto, Shah Faisal, Sharae Faisal and Jinnah International Airport.
Speaking at the event, the chief minister said Karachi, as the country’s economic centre, needed an efficient and modern transport system to support economic activity, urban expansion and public convenience. He praised Local Government Minister Nasir Hussain Shah, Mayor Murtaza Wahab and KMC engineering teams for delivering the work within the stipulated period.
“This corridor serves one of Karachi’s busiest traffic junctions. The project will ease traffic pressure and provide direct connectivity from Shahrah-e-Bhutto to Shah Faisal, Sharae Faisal and Jinnah International Airport,” Murad Ali Shah said.
“Completing a project of this scale in just 90 days reflects the commitment and capability of our municipal institutions. The people of Karachi deserve modern infrastructure, and we will continue investing in projects that improve their quality of life,” he added.
Project components
Funded by the Sindh Local Government Department and carried out by KMC, the scheme includes a 700-metre dual carriageway flyover and a 1,255-metre dual carriageway main carriageway. It also includes additional at-grade roads linking Azeempura Road, Shahrah-e-Bhutto, Shah Faisal and Thandi Sarak.
Officials said the work also covered the rehabilitation of around 2,075 metres of drainage infrastructure, construction of 850 metres of footpaths, installation of centre median barriers, redesign of the Azeempura roundabout and a street-lighting system comprising 93 poles and 157 modern lights.
Chief minister cites wider Karachi works
Talking to journalists after the inauguration, Murad Ali Shah said the government had sped up infrastructure development in Karachi and other parts of Sindh. He referred to projects opened during the last four to six months, including Shahrah-e-Bhutto, the Korangi Causeway Bridge, the Bhains Colony Bridge and the Meena Bazaar project.
The chief minister also criticised political opponents, saying Karachi had previously been entrusted to a party he described as being known only for fighting, and added that its leadership was now occupied with internal disputes.
He further said President Asif Ali Zardari had called him earlier in the day to ask about the inauguration of the Azeempura Flyover, adding that the PPP leadership remained committed to Karachi’s development and prosperity. Referring to earlier federal announcements, Shah also criticised former prime minister Imran Khan for announcing development packages worth billions of rupees for Karachi without allocating funds for their implementation.
