Federal budget raises twin cities public transport subsidy

The federal budget 2026-27 has increased the subsidy for Metro Bus and Green Electric Bus services in Rawalpindi and Islamabad to Rs7.3 billion from Rs3 billion. Officials say the plan also includes expansion of electric bus services to 20 additional routes.

ISLAMABAD: The federal budget for 2026-27 has sharply increased support for public transport in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, lifting the allocation for the Metro Bus and Green Electric Bus services to Rs7.3 billion from Rs3 billion in the previous fiscal year.

The higher subsidy covers both services and is aimed at strengthening affordable transport options for commuters in the twin cities. The additional funding is expected to help improve the quality and availability of public transport facilities.

The Metro Bus system linking Rawalpindi and Islamabad has been in operation since 2014. Officials said the new fiscal plan also includes a proposal to expand the Green Electric Bus network to 20 additional sectors and routes across the two cities.

Public transport services have already been launched on 23 routes in Rawalpindi Division, while Green Electric Buses are to be introduced on 20 more routes in phases, according to officials.
