Burglars broke into a jewellery shop in Karachi’s Saddar after cutting the shutter and escaped with a safe containing gold jewellery. Police are investigating, while the Sindh home minister has sought a report on the incident.
KARACHI: Burglars broke into a jewellery shop on Zaiba-un-Nisa Street in Saddar after cutting through the shutter and made off with a safe containing gold jewellery said to be worth millions of rupees, according to police and officials.
As per details, the incident took place within the limits of the Preedy police station at around 4:40am. Police were informed about the break-in at approximately 5:15am by a watchman from the bazaar.
CCTV footage from cameras installed outside the shop has surfaced, showing the suspects arriving with iron rods and cutting tools. The footage shows them carrying out the burglary and later leaving with the safe. Police are also collecting additional footage from Safe City cameras and nearby locations in an effort to determine the route used by the suspects.
SHO Preedy Ayub Mirani said the robbery was carried out by two suspects riding a motorcycle. He said the men allegedly cut the shutter, entered the shop and took away the shop’s locks as well.
The exact value of the stolen jewellery has not yet been determined. Police have asked the shop owner to provide details of the missing items so the total loss can be assessed.
Watchman questioned, investigation under way
Police have taken a watchman into custody for questioning and have launched an investigation into the incident. SSP South Mazhar Ali said the watchman reportedly tried to confront the suspects but was threatened at gunpoint.
According to the watchman’s account, the suspects first offered him Rs50,000 in exchange for cooperation. SSP South Mazhar Ali said this statement was also audible in the CCTV audio.
The footage and the watchman’s statement are now part of the investigation being carried out by police.
Sindh home minister seeks report
Meanwhile, Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar has taken notice of the burglary and sought a detailed report from the DIG South.
Police said efforts are under way to trace the suspects through video evidence gathered from the area. Investigators are examining the available footage to identify the men involved and reconstruct their movements before and after the burglary.
The case has drawn attention because of the manner in which the suspects entered the shop, the removal of the safe, and the claim that gold jewellery worth millions of rupees was inside it. However, officials said the precise value of the stolen items will only be known after the shop owner submits complete details.
Authorities have not yet announced any arrests in connection with the burglary beyond the questioning of the watchman.
