LAHORE: A house roof collapse in Lahore late Wednesday left at least eight people dead, with rescue workers still clearing debris at the site as authorities ordered an inquiry into the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lahore Deputy Commissioner retired Capt Muhammad Ali Ijaz confirmed the death toll, while his office said on Thursday morning that he was overseeing the rescue operation in Harbanspura. Rescue 1122 teams, assisted by district administration officials, were working to recover those still believed to be trapped under the rubble, with heavy machinery deployed to speed up the effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another account from rescue officials put the toll at nine dead and three injured, identifying the site as near Sukh Nehr in the Baghbanpura area. The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment, and debris removal was continuing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed grief over the loss of life and directed authorities to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The deputy commissioner also instructed officials at the scene to ensure the safe recovery of all those trapped and ordered an investigation to determine what caused the roof to give way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The latest collapse comes weeks after another deadly incident in Lahore\u2019s Kahna area, where the roof of a tuition centre fell in and killed 14 children. In early May, four children were killed and 20 people were injured when the roof of a classroom at a private school in Dera Ghazi Khan collapsed during construction work for an extension, with a district administration report later saying the roof had been overloaded with sand and bricks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
