The campaign was launched in Shakarparian on Tuesday.

ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority has set a target of planting 210,725 trees during its monsoon plantation campaign in urban areas and the Margalla Hills National Park, as it steps up efforts to expand green cover across the federal capital.

A CDA officer said the campaign also includes 250,000 seed balls and 1,400,000 seed sowing. Indigenous species planned for the drive include Chirpine, Amaltas, Willow, Kachnar, Jacranda, Pilkan, Sukhchain, Moor Pankh, Legestonia, Fiddle Wood, Bottel Bursh, Goldan Duranta, Marwa, Cassia Galaca, Gravillia, Sanatha, Puhlli, Jaman, Alobukhara, Apricot, Date palm, Alestonia, Bischofia, Quisqalus Indica, Bougainvillea and Dheraik.

The authority formally launched the campaign in Shakarparian on Tuesday, where CDA Chairman retired Lt Sohail Ashraf and Member Environment Abdullah Khurram Niazi planted saplings. Officials said 1,000 pine trees were planted in the Shakarparian Parade Ground area during the event.

Nine partner companies are contributing 57,250 plants under corporate social responsibility initiatives, the CDA officer said. The plantation activity in Shakarparian was also supported by the Clean and Green Islamabad Movement, which organised a separate tree planting event at Parade Ground hosted by its chairman, Ahsan Zafar Bakhtawari.

Sardar Tahir, president of the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce, CDA senior officers, and representatives of the business community and civil society also attended the ceremony.

The CDA said the drive is part of a broader push for environmental sustainability and urban forestry in Islamabad, and appealed to citizens and civil society to take part. The campaign is being carried out under the message, “Let’s Plant Today for a Greener Tomorrow.”

The latest drive comes after the authority faced criticism last year over tree cutting in Shakarparian and other areas, particularly near Lok Virsa, where civil society and sections of the media objected to the uprooting of trees. The CDA had maintained at the time that only paper mulberry trees were removed.

This year, the authority has placed renewed emphasis on plantation activity. Recently, the CDA chairman and the member environment also attended a tree plantation ceremony at Ankara Park.

The CDA has set a target of planting 210,725 trees in Islamabad during the monsoon season, along with 250,000 seed balls and 1.4 million seed sowing.
