The utility attributed recent outages to an exceptional heatwave, high demand and technical faults in the distribution system.

RAWALPINDI: The Islamabad Electric Supply Company said on Tuesday it had ended load management and was working to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply across its service area.

According to Iesco spokesman Raja Asim, there is currently no electricity shortfall in the region and the required supply is being provided through the national grid station. He said normal operating conditions had been restored and that demand and supply were being monitored on a continuous basis.

In a statement, the spokesman said the company’s priority remained maintaining uninterrupted supply for consumers throughout the Iesco region. He added that the utility was committed to providing reliable and quality electricity through efficient system operations, preventive maintenance, ongoing monitoring of the network and quick restoration in case of any unforeseen outage.

Heatwave-driven demand surge

Raja Asim said the load-shedding reported on June 29 and 30 and from July 1 to July 5 came during an unprecedented heatwave that sharply increased electricity demand and placed exceptional strain on the distribution network. He said this situation compelled the company to introduce scheduled load management where required in line with system needs.

He said some temporary power interruptions also occurred because of technical faults that emerged under excessive system loading. According to him, these included damaged distribution transformers, burnt or loosened jumpers and faults in underground power cables caused by heavy electrical load, high temperatures and moisture.

The spokesman said emergency permit to work shutdowns were necessary in such cases so damaged equipment could be repaired or replaced safely and electricity restored as quickly as possible. He added that in Rawalpindi city in particular, where several 11kV overhead feeders are mounted on shared pole structures and multiple underground feeders run through common cable trenches and manholes, isolating one faulty feeder sometimes required shutting down nearby healthy feeders as well to protect maintenance staff and allow repair work.

He said these shutdowns were technical and safety-related and should not be treated as load management. The spokesman also said Iesco regretted the inconvenience caused to consumers during the period and appreciated their patience and cooperation, while reaffirming the company’s commitment to strengthening the distribution system and ensuring safe, reliable and efficient electricity services across the region.

Iesco says load management has ended and electricity supply has returned to normal across its region.
