ISLAMABAD: A large fire broke out at Islamabad\u2019s H-9 Weekly Bazaar on Tuesday night, damaging a substantial number of stalls and triggering a major emergency response, according to officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The blaze started in Block C of the market, an area largely occupied by shoe stalls, and spread quickly. Firefighters, police and district administration personnel reached the site soon after being informed, while extra assistance was requested from Rawalpindi because of the scale of the fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The H-9 market, also known as Itwar Bazaar or Sunday Bazaar, operates on Fridays, Tuesdays and Sundays. Preliminary information indicated that hundreds of stalls were severely affected. The assistant commissioner of I-9 was present at the scene and oversaw the firefighting effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Efforts to bring the fire under control were still continuing when the report was filed, and the cause of the blaze had not been immediately determined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The latest incident is the fifth fire reported at the weekly bazaar since 2017. Of these five incidents, three occurred on Wednesdays and two on Tuesdays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On August 24, 2017, a major fire in Block C destroyed about 550 stalls selling garments, utensils and nimkos, while another 98 stalls in Block H and a shoe market were also affected. On July 19, 2018, around 110 stalls in E and F blocks were completely destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On October 30, 2019, at least 300 stalls in blocks D, E and H were gutted. Another fire on December 7, 2022, destroyed 133 stalls, including 101 in F-Block and the remaining ones in E-Block.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the most recent major incident before Tuesday\u2019s blaze, nearly 700 stalls were destroyed in July 2024 after a fire spread rapidly through the garment section following rainfall. Authorities at the time suspected an electrical short circuit had caused that fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Repeated fires at the H-9 Weekly Bazaar have for years prompted concerns about safety arrangements, electrical wiring and firefighting preparedness.
