Police said footage showed two men taking the cameras and a cabinet.

ISLAMABAD: Three surveillance cameras belonging to the Islamabad Safe City Authority were stolen in a single day in G-9/4, but the theft was detected only 26 days later, according to police.

Police said the cameras, valued at Rs549,500, were removed on May 5, 2026, along with equipment kept inside a cabinet. The cabinet was also taken away. A case was later registered at Karachi Company Police Station on the complaint of Safe City official Ahmed Hassan against two individuals.

According to police, footage recorded by the system showed two men stealing the three dome cameras and the cabinet. An officer said the cameras had been offline since May 5, but no one noticed the issue at the time. A technical team visited the site on May 31 to check the matter and found that the cameras and cabinet were missing. The last available footage was then reviewed, after which senior officers were informed and a case was registered on their directions.

The incident was the second such case in recent months involving theft of Safe City equipment in the federal capital. Earlier, on April 19, 2026, a face-recognition camera installed at Faizabad Metro Station was stolen. Police said the authority learned of that theft after several days when technical staff visited the site after the camera remained continuously offline. The camera was found missing, and earlier footage showed a man taking it away. In that case, the authority took nine days to determine that the camera had been stolen, and a case was registered on April 28.

Earlier theft cases

The latest incident adds to a series of thefts targeting Safe City infrastructure in Islamabad over the past few years.

On October 24, 2025, thieves stole Safe City equipment located about one and a half kilometres from Karachi Company Police Station. That case came to light when a technician visited G-9/2 and found the lock of a pole at Street No 11 broken. On inspection, a battery worth Rs35,000 was found missing.

In March 2024, two Safe City cameras worth Rs1.1 million installed on the Koral flyover near the police station were also found missing. The theft was discovered after the monitoring room stopped receiving footage from the cameras and the matter was later traced to their disappearance.

In September 2023, another Safe City Project camera worth Rs120,000 was stolen from near Margalla police station. Police said the camera was taken on September 2, but the authority came to know about the theft two weeks later.

The repeated thefts have raised questions about the monitoring and security of a system set up to observe and record criminal activity in the capital.

Three Islamabad Safe City cameras were stolen in G-9/4 on May 5, but the theft was detected only 26 days later.
