KARACHI: Two police personnel were martyred on Monday after a speeding dumper truck crashed into a police van parked on the M9 Motorway within the limits of the Gadap City police station, according to officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a statement, Malir police said the police mobile had been deployed for patrolling and snap checking when it was struck by the dumper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A police spokesperson said the impact killed Constable Wajid and Sub-Inspector Sahib Dad Solangi on the spot. \u201cThe speeding dumper was travelling to Karachi from Hyderabad. The driver has been taken into custody,\u201d the spokesperson said, adding that legal action had also been initiated against the driver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Motorway police also confirmed the deaths in a separate statement. They said initial information suggested that the dumper hit a police van parked on the roadside. \u201cAccording to initial information, the dumper hit a police van parked on the side of the road,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The statements issued by Malir police and Motorway police both confirmed that the collision involved a dumper truck and a parked police vehicle on the M9 Motorway. The incident took place in the jurisdiction of Gadap City police station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officials said the dumper driver was taken into custody after the crash. The police spokesperson said legal proceedings had been started against him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The latest incident comes weeks after another major accident on the same motorway. On February 13, an oil tanker and a passenger bus were involved in a serious crash on the M9 Motorway, leaving 12 people dead and six others injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Karachi has seen an increase in traffic accidents over the past year, particularly those involving heavy vehicles such as dumpers and water tankers. Hospital data showed that nearly 500 people were killed and 4,879 injured in road accidents in 2024 due to a range of causes, including reckless driving and construction-related activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The deaths of the two policemen add to growing concern over road safety on major routes linked to Karachi, especially where heavy transport vehicles are involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
