Violators will face e-tickets and fines based on vehicle type.

KARACHI: The Karachi Traffic Police have announced a new traffic management plan under which motorbikes, buses and rickshaws will be required to stay in designated lanes on Sharea Faisal, with fines to be imposed on violators.

The initiative was announced by DIG Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah, who said the plan is aimed at bringing organised lane discipline to one of Karachi’s busiest roads through the use of the city’s existing surveillance system.

Speaking to Geo News, Shah said the arrangement would first be introduced on Sharea Faisal because the required enforcement infrastructure is already available there.

He said a one-month awareness campaign would be launched before regular enforcement starts on June 1 so that commuters can become familiar with the new rules.

How the lane plan will work

Under the new system, motorbikes, buses, rickshaws and other light transport vehicles, including Mazdas, will have to use the two lanes on the far left.

The other lanes — two or three depending on the section of the road — will be reserved for faster-moving traffic such as cars and double-cabin vehicles.

According to Shah, the enforcement mechanism will rely on the existing camera network, which will generate e-tickets for those found violating the lane restrictions.

Fines fixed by vehicle type

The DIG traffic said penalties have been set according to the category of vehicle. Motorbike riders will face a fine of Rs500, while rickshaws will be fined Rs2,500 and buses Rs7,500 for violations.

Shah said the measure is intended to improve the flow of traffic and introduce lane discipline in Karachi in a structured way for the first time.

The traffic police plan centres on one of the city’s main thoroughfares and is expected to begin after the completion of the awareness phase announced by the authorities.

Officials have said the move is part of a broader effort to regulate road use more effectively by separating slower and faster-moving vehicles into specific lanes on Sharea Faisal.

With camera-based monitoring already available on the route, the authorities say the system will be enforced through electronic ticketing rather than only through on-ground checking.

The announcement sets out both the categories of vehicles that will be restricted to the left-side lanes and the penalties that will apply once enforcement begins in June.

Karachi Traffic Police will begin enforcing dedicated lanes for motorbikes, buses and rickshaws on Sharea Faisal from June 1 after a month-long awareness campaign.
