They say the contamination has spread from Lath Basti to nearby fishing settlements, harming marine life and threatening public health.

KARACHI: Coastal waters near Karachi’s Lath Basti are facing severe pollution as untreated animal waste and hazardous medical debris are being discharged into the sea every day, according to local fishermen.

They said nearly 1,600 livestock enclosures in the Bhains Colony area are releasing large amounts of dung directly into the sea without any treatment. Fishermen added that used syringes, injection bottles and other medical waste from livestock treatment are also ending up in the water, deepening the environmental problem.

The contamination, they said, is no longer limited to Lath Basti. Nearby coastal settlements, including Chashma Goth, Ibrahim Hyderi and Rehri Goth, have also been affected as pollution spreads along the shoreline.

Fishermen warned that the combination of animal waste and medical debris is harming marine life and creating risks for communities whose livelihoods depend on the sea. They said handling polluted waste during fishing work exposes them to diseases including hepatitis and other infectious illnesses.

Marine life and livelihoods under pressure

Residents said the condition of the area has changed sharply over the past two decades. They recalled that the waters off Lath Basti were once clear and fish were available close to the shore. Now, they said, the issue is no longer only overfishing, as marine life has moved away from the coast.

According to fishermen, they are now forced to travel miles into deeper waters in search of a catch, and even then often return without fish.

The worsening pollution has raised concern among local communities who rely on fishing for income and food. Fishermen said the spread of contamination across multiple settlements is affecting both the marine ecosystem and the daily lives of people living along the coast.

Local leader criticises waste disposal policy

Local political and social leader Sardar Aziz Daud Jatt criticised what he described as flawed policies that have allowed waste from Bhains Colony to be dumped into the sea unchecked.

He said the contamination has now spread across several coastal localities, adding to the environmental and public health crisis in the area.

The reports from fishermen and local residents point to a continuing deterioration in Karachi’s coastal environment, with untreated livestock waste and medical refuse contributing to pollution in Lath Basti and adjoining settlements.

Untreated livestock waste and medical debris from Bhains Colony are polluting Karachi’s coastal waters, according to local fishermen.
