He said completed dredging and ongoing turning basin work will allow larger vessels and improve cargo handling capacity.

KARACHI: Major infrastructure improvements at the port have entered the implementation stage, with the work aimed at improving operational efficiency, cutting logistics expenses and boosting Pakistan’s trade competitiveness, Karachi Gateway Terminal Limited (KGTL) and Karachi Gateway Terminal Multipurpose Limited (KGTML) Chief Executive Officer Khurram Aziz Khan said.

He made the remarks during a visit by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, who was accompanied by Karachi Port Trust Chairman Rear Admiral Shahid Ahmed.

During a briefing held on the occasion, Khurram Aziz Khan outlined progress on the ongoing works and said dredging from berths 6 to 17 had been completed. According to him, the berthing basin has now reached a depth of 15.5 metres.

He said the completed dredging would allow the port to receive larger ships and would substantially improve its cargo handling capability.

Turning basin work in progress

The KGTL and KGTML chief executive also said work on the turning basin was continuing. He stated that once completed, the facility would be able to handle vessels measuring up to 350 metres in length, compared with the earlier limit of 300 metres.

According to Khurram Aziz Khan, the increase in vessel-handling capacity will enable the port to accommodate bulk cargo ships of up to 120,000 tons. He said this would double the existing capacity and help lower freight costs.

The briefing was given in the presence of the maritime affairs minister and the Karachi Port Trust chairman as the authorities reviewed the progress of the port-related infrastructure works.

Khurram Aziz Khan said the broader objective of the upgrades was to strengthen the port’s performance and support Pakistan’s position in trade by making cargo movement more efficient and cost-effective.

The developments highlighted during the visit centred on dredging and turning basin expansion, both of which are intended to improve the port’s ability to handle larger vessels and greater cargo volumes.

Officials were informed that the dredging work covering berths 6 through 17 had already been completed, while work on the turning basin remained underway. The planned enhancement in the turning basin, Khurram Aziz Khan said, would raise the vessel length limit by 50 metres.

He said the resulting increase in capacity would support the handling of larger bulk cargo vessels and contribute to reducing freight costs, while also improving the port’s overall cargo operations.

The visit and briefing focused on the execution of these upgrades and their expected impact on port efficiency, cargo handling and trade competitiveness, as described by the KGTL and KGTML chief executive.

Port infrastructure upgrades at Karachi have entered the execution phase, according to KGTL and KGTML CEO Khurram Aziz Khan.
