Two Water and Sanitation Agency workers died while cleaning a sewer near the Old Bus Stand on Multan Road in Vehari after they were exposed to poisonous gases, officials said.
The deceased were identified as Sunny and Sawal. Initial reports indicated that Sunny had entered the sewer first, while Sawal went in after him in an attempt to rescue his colleague. Both men lost consciousness and died.
Rescue 1122 reached the site, but the workers could not be saved. Their bodies were moved to the Vehari District Headquarters Hospital for legal formalities.
WASA officials blamed a contractor for starting the sewer work without permission and said a complaint had been submitted to police over alleged negligence. Police have begun an investigation into the incident.
