The Sindh government has approved 130 new posts in the SBCA as Karachi shifts from a district-based to a town-based building control system. The new positions will be funded through the authority’s own resources.
KARACHI: The Sindh government has sanctioned 130 additional positions in the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) as part of a shift to a town-based administrative system for Karachi, according to an official notification issued by the Local Government, Housing and Town Planning Department.
The decision replaces the existing district-level structure in the Karachi region and was approved following a request submitted by the SBCA director general. Officials said the change is intended to improve oversight of construction activity, enforcement of building rules and service delivery linked to building control in the city.
Under the approval, the newly created posts include 18 directors (technical) in BPS-19, 14 deputy directors (technical) in BPS-18, 22 assistant directors (technical) in BPS-17, 22 senior building inspectors in BPS-16 and 54 building inspectors in BPS-14.
The notification stated that appointments against these posts will be made under the prescribed recruitment rules and other relevant regulations. It also said the financial impact of the new hiring will be met entirely from SBCA’s own resources, with no additional financial burden on the provincial government.
Officials said the order has taken effect immediately and forms part of wider efforts to strengthen urban governance and regulatory arrangements in Karachi. They said the town-based model is expected to improve supervision of building activity, increase accountability at the local level and strengthen the authority’s ability to respond to violations and public complaints.
An official described the step as an important move towards streamlining building control operations in the country’s largest city as it faces mounting urban development pressures.
