Karachi to start e-challans for lane violations on Sharea Faisal from June 1

Karachi Traffic Police will begin issuing e-challans for lane violations on Sharea Faisal from June 1. The new system will use existing surveillance cameras to enforce designated lanes for different vehicle categories.

KARACHI: The Karachi Traffic Police have announced that an e-challan system for lane violations on Sharea Faisal will take effect from June 1, with motorists breaching lane discipline on the city’s main artery to face electronic tickets.

According to a traffic police spokesperson, the move will apply to drivers who do not follow designated lane rules on the road. The spokesperson urged the public to observe lane discipline strictly while driving on Sharea Faisal.

The spokesperson said all vehicles must stay in their assigned lanes and added that motorcycles, buses and cars would also be required to comply with the lane system.

The announcement follows remarks made days earlier by DIG Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah to Geo News about a new traffic management plan for one of Karachi’s busiest corridors. He said the plan was aimed at introducing an organised lane system on Sharea Faisal by using the surveillance camera network already installed there.

According to Shah, the system will first be introduced on Sharea Faisal because the enforcement infrastructure is already available on that road. Under the plan, motorbikes, buses, rickshaws and other light transport vehicles, including Mazdas, will be required to use the two left-side lanes.

He said the other lanes — two or three depending on the section of the road — would be reserved for faster-moving traffic such as cars and double-cabin vehicles. Shah added that the existing camera system would support enforcement by generating e-tickets for those found violating the lane arrangement.

The DIG traffic also said fines had been set by vehicle category. Under the plan, motorbikes and rickshaws will face a fine of Rs2,500 for violations, while buses will be fined Rs7,500.
