ISLAMABAD: Islamabad police said an alleged member of a dacoit gang was arrested in an injured condition after he was struck by gunfire allegedly fired by his own accomplices during an attack on a police team in the Humak police station area.
According to an official, Humak police were taking an arrested suspect, identified as Liaqat Zahoor, to recover stolen valuables on his identification when armed accomplices, who were lying in wait along the route, opened indiscriminate fire on the police party in an attempt to secure his release.
The official said the police personnel remained unharmed because they were wearing bulletproof jackets and had other protective arrangements in place at the time of the attack.
He added that during the exchange of fire, the arrested suspect was injured after being hit by bullets fired by his own associates.
Police account of the incident
The incident took place within the jurisdiction of Humak Police Station, where, according to the official version, the police team had moved with the detained suspect for the recovery of stolen items. During that process, armed men allegedly linked to the suspect launched an attack on the police party.
Police said the purpose of the firing was to free Liaqat Zahoor from custody. However, the attempt did not succeed, and the suspect was instead taken into custody in an injured state after the exchange.
The official statement did not provide further details about the number of attackers, the nature of the stolen valuables being recovered, or whether any of the accomplices were arrested following the incident.
Police also maintained that the suspect’s injuries were caused by shots fired by his own accomplices during the gun battle.
The development adds to a series of police actions in which suspects have been reported injured or arrested during armed confrontations. In this case, the official account specifically said the firing began when accomplices hiding on the route attacked the police team as it moved with the detained suspect for recovery proceedings.
No additional official details were shared in the statement beyond the sequence described by the police official.
